(The World Of) Becoming
The piece is inspired by Plato's ideal Forms. Plato stated that
the world of Becoming (our world) is defined by the world of Being,
the world of ideal Forms. He maintained that all things are representations
of their ideal Forms; as an example, a badly-drawn triangle is
a representation of its ideal Form, the triangle-as-such. His
concept is transferred in the construction of this composition.
The piece consists of three sections:
1. REPRESENTATION OF AN IDEAL FORM: SCRATCHED
VELVET
An aural impression of a real life object: a velvet material and
the action of scratching. The musical material that represents the
textile's texture, uses sounds with velvet quality and moves away from
any obvious melodic lines; the action of scratching on the other hand,
uses more sparkling sounds and it is portrayed by 'action' sounds which
have a more close relationship with time.
2. DANCING ON 1
Every section uses its previous one as its ideal form. Successive
representations of the real life object move through different
disguises. The written musical information of the first section
was manipulated in the two-dimensional space resulting in patterns
of mobile and static forms, which were used to generate successive
visual metamorphoses. The second section resembles an unsteady,
moving visual form such as a dance.
3. STILL PHOTOGRAPHS
The last part mirrors a static visual form such as a series
of photographs, where the audio information is exploited geometrically,
creating images that rely on patterns of colour of different spectral
criteria.
